Women’s Self-Defense Seminar

Feb 28 SAT TIME: 9 a.m. to 12 noon

The Farmington Hills/Farmington Emergency Preparedness Commission (EPC) will present a women’s self-defense seminar on Saturday, February 28 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Costick Center, located on Eleven Mile Road between Middlebelt and Inkster.

Through a series of close-range drills, participants will learn both situational awareness skills and self-defense skills. The class will be taught by Jeff Duncan, master instructor and sixth degree black belt; his wife Connie, second degree black belt and chief instructor; and additional female black belt instructors from Farmington Martial Arts.

This is the seventh time that the EPC has hosted a women’s self-defense seminar and close to 500 women have participated. Over the past three years, these seminars have raised $2,657 for Haven and another $445 for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. “I’ve seen varsity jackets from our four local high schools (Farmington, North Farmington, Harrison and Mercy), plus girls from several of the local middle schools and at least one professor from Lawrence Technological University,” said EPC chairperson Mike Sweeney. “We’re really pleased to see that women of all ages are taking advantage of this important training.”
